The Entrep Class of Prof Jorge Saguinsin through its class leaders Dr. Dom Velasco and Scientist Kim Semon will conduct a forum on Innovation in Medical Science 2 to 4 pm at the Amphitheater this coming Saturday, July 9, 2016.  All MBAH students here and at Asian Hospitals, colleagues other Entrep students, and all AGSB students are invited to attend.  One of the significant presentations is on 3d printing, a state of the art equipment that is useful in rapid prototyping, metallurgy, design, aerospace and defense.   3d printing is here available in the Philippines and will help propel the country towards modernization of manufacturing technology and advancement of science.  It is heard that DOST through MIRDC will invest in a modern, 3d metal printing

One of the speakers is Dr. Rene Catan, an MBAH graduate and who also took up Entrepreneurship under this professor.  He said he was inspired by this class, when I talked to him a while ago.

Dr. Rene Catan has agreed to be a keynote speaker for this coming Saturday forum on 3d printing.  He is the CEO of Athrologic (Mirand?) which obtained a funding from Idea Space  and featured as one of the key innovations in the Philippines for medical technology by BBC.  His company has come out with a knee joint replacement that is one of the cost in US (down to $5,000).  But it is significant that his company is now worth P250 million

Dr. Catan developed a procedure for 2 piece knee replacement technology that would answer the need for some 80,000 Filipinos who suffer arthritic pain from bum knee.  He developed the technology in 2011.  He obtained funding from IdeaSpace a kickstarter type of funding of  Smart.  Arthologic was one of the finalist.

He developed all ready a procedure to mass produce the knee replacement.  (3d printing?)

Dr Catan is from UP Cebu and received an award from UP Cebu for his achievement.

The coming home of Dr. Catan to be a speaker  is significant:

1. He achieved what you want for MBAH graduates - to go into research in medical science and technology

2.  That he used the platform of entrepreneurship is heartwarming;  he will be inspiring many students.(and a multi millionaire to boot)

3.  That humble our course may be, we are producing graduates like Dr. Catan, without multi million funding.

Explanation of the assignments and grading system

     Individual:

1.      NU 10: 10 points 10 new ideas.  This fosters creativity and inventiveness -  10pts.

These are new ideas arising from gaps in the wants and needs of the market and from what pisses you off.

Describe the situation, what is wanting and lacking, then the innovation and its advantages and benefits. Describe how the process for implementing the innovation/new ideas

                        This is to be sent/uploaded to : profjorge.entrep.innovation@blogger.com weekly on or                            before the session date.

2.      Case analysis - 10%.  Oral recitation:  This is a test of critical and analytical

thinking.  This is about research and data collection and proving and disproving the hypothesis to the problem. This tests the ability of the student to relate to the goal/vision of the enterprise or entrepreneur. This is about relevance and focused thinking. No written report is required

3.      Special report -  10%  This is a five minute, at least 30 pages PPT presentation on the topic that was assigned (related to the topic of the session)/preferred by the student.  The presentation is to be graded according to the rubric.  It is suggested that the class create an account at Slideshare and that the report be uploaded to the said site.  The class sec shall schedule the SR presentation

4. Business plan - 30%.  This is a major requirement of the course.  The students are required to submit outputs that every session. as stipulated in the syllabus.   The students should be able to submit a BP at the last session of the course.  It should be at least 40 pages long A1, 12 points, font Arial double space, with table of contents and pagination

          Of the 30 points, the student will be graded with 5 points based on his regular submission of                 outputs for the BP on the day they are due.

Failure to submit the BP means that the student get an INC grade, which could lead to a 1 grade if not submitted.

The student will not be graded on attendance because he will be unable to submit outputs if he does not attend the class.

Subtotal:   60 points

Group work:

1. Invitation of the guest entrepreneur.   25%

The entrepreneur is a living proof a walking lesson on entrepreneurship.  If the group can bring him in the class, the group gets a four.  The group takes care of his certificate, gifts, parking and other tokens for the guest.

       Compare and describe:

1.    Customer behavior (how are they using the outlets)

2.    Estimated profile of the customer:   age, sex, appearance etc.  Sorry no MR or

speed, food taste 

   3.  Input, throughput, output study of a micro enterprise:

            Study a food street cart:  describe the food/service being rendered, describe the

inputs, and the process, the cost, vs the outputs (the product)   How do they match up (place the ITO diagram)

Let us analyze the word medical entrepreneurship  (Word algorithm)

Medical refers to health care:   doctors, medicine, hospital, health worker, :   processes, patient, patient link, resources and partners

Entrepreneurship refers to creation innovation, with little or no resources  It involves love and passion for one which one does.

Does medical entrepreneurship discovering/research of new drugs, processes cures with little or no resources to improve quality of life of the masses of patient. This could involve cure and prevention of diseases.
