                                           The MBAH eagle came home to share his success

The chairman of the Central and Marketing Cluster Dr. George Fong who attended last Saturday's  forum on Medical Innovation was amazed at the quality and depth of the discussion by the speakers on Medical Innovation sponsored by the MBAH Entrep Class PM session.  He said  we should have held this with more preparation more marketing and did this at the auditorium (I was emailing  him early on, but for some reasons the emails did not get through.  Prof Larry Grey, IT professor, was amazed and asked who did this?  I said it was the class.  They planned it and financed the event.

Those who attended from the school top management were Dr Tony Del Carmen, program director for Ateneo Center for Entrepreneurship (we were together in at least 2 forum on entrepreneurship abroad) Dr. George Fong and Prof Larry Grey.  Dr. Gloanne Adolor did not not make although Scientist Kim and yours truly talked to her noon time before the forum for the signature of the certificates

The program/forum is part of the requirement for the class, entrepreneur presentation.  Bring the entrepreneur to the class for a talk

The forum was spearheaded by Dr. Dominic Velasco, MD and Scientist Kim Semon.

The emcee for the afternoon was Dra Lindsay Gail Winston Torralba - Garcia.  The tokens expenses was shouldered by the Class

The speakers were:

Dr. Rene Catan -  President of Arthologic, maker of  of knee implants  It is significant to note that Dr Catan is an MBAH graduate, and of this class, and took up the same exercises and activities just like the others. Ii is hoped that what he took here honed him to be a great entrepreneur.

As this was a prono bono affair, the class gave the speakers token of appreciation and Certificate of Appreciation from the Ateneo Graduate School of Busiiness



Some summaries of the talk:

Cedric Ng  CEO of Omnifab

He is the grandson of HK Chinese immigrant who went to Naga City, established a lumber trading business, eventually moved to Manila where they set up hardware business.  They lived in a entreswelo:   living space at the top floor and business at the ground floor.

His talk is a superb education/learning on 3d printing. He said there are 3 types of printer:

        1.  fused deposition modeling
        2.  multi jet printing
        3.  direct metal laser sintering (the metal parts are done layer by layer)

The uses are mostly implants, prosthesis  and surgical guides.and in the future bio printing  Surgical guides are models of the body parts to be operated on and a 3d model is made so as to practice the procedure and  He mentioned the doctors who use such technology:    Drs. Rafael Bundoc and Rene Catan (the guest for the afternoon) and the President of PDA (who use this in braces and other dental procedures.  (In private he mentioned that a technology department is proposing to invest in such a printer for use in metallurgy, defense, medicine, aerospace and rapid prototyping (for entrepreneurs)

His theme is enabling others to become extraordinary (doctors, manufacturers, entrepreneurs.

The talk of Dr. Catan is a fusion of business (entrepreneurship, strama) and medical science, technology and mechanical engineering.   His passion for nation building is seen from his theme of "democratizing knee surgery/implant.  Being a man for others, magis, heroism (Ignatian spirituality must have been truly internalized by him. That he started his talk with a woman disabled by knee and then walking again normally (at the end) shows a remarkable concern for the lessening of pain of patients at a lower cost.  True Atenean and nation building.

1.  He chose knee surgery although they do hip joint replacement because it is highly competitive and the prices has gone down.  He went into knee joint replacement and implants because it less crowded/competitive.  Their next competitor is much higher and they can still lower their cost

Dr. Rene Catan has agreed to be a keynote speaker for this coming Saturday forum on 3d printing.  He is the CEO of Arthologic (Mirand?) which obtained a funding from Idea Space  and featured as one of the key innovations in the Philippines for medical technology by BBC.  His company has come out with a knee joint replacement that is one of the cost in US (down to $5,000).  But it is significant that his company is now worth P250 million

Dr. Catan developed a procedure for 2 piece knee replacement technology that would answer the need for some 80,000 Filipinos who suffer arthritic pain from bum knee.  He developed the technology in 2011.  He obtained funding from IdeaSpace a kickstarter type of funding of  Smart.  Arthologic was one of the finalist.

He developed all ready a procedure to mass produce the knee replacement.  (3d printing?)

What is significant about this, is (and maybe batchmate po nila si Dr Catan) is he is an MBAH graduate and took up Entrep under this writer.  

The coming home of Dr. Catan to be a speaker  is significant:

1. He achieved what you want for MBAH graduates - to go into research in medical science and technology

2.  That he used the platform of entrepreneurship is heartwarming;  he will be inspiring many students.(and a multi millionaire to boot)

3.  That humble our course may be, we are producing graduates like Dr. Catan, without multi million funding.from the University/school

This is the draft of the welcome remarks I will deliver this coming Saturday, upon instructions of  Dr Dom Velasco and Scientist Kim Simon

Good afternoon guests;

Dr Francisco Chung, Ph.D, Dr. Rene Catan MD MBA, Dra. Gloan Adolor, Mr. Cedric Ng, CEO of Ominifab, colleagues at MBAH, entrep students, other AGSB students and their guests, friends of AGSB.

Welcome to the Medical Innovation forum organized and sponsored by MBAH entrep class, led by Dr Dom Velasco and Scientist Kim Semon.

Talk about innovation and entrepreneurship.  We define, and this is one of the definitions,entrepreneurship  is about innovation, it is about creating new products, its about creating something from nothing, as in Magic (Disney)  Talk about serendipity

3d printing

We initially thought of this event as a classroom activity by having 3d printing machine presentation from teh supplier. But the discussion went on and on to include medical applications

Thus we were able able contact Mr. Cedric Ng of Ominifab and he initially referred a spine surgeon to talk about 3d printing application. But he is not available because he is fully booked because of his innovative method n spine surgery

It was timely that when we planned this, the Shanghai convention of 3d printers, involving about a 100 firms showed great promise in medicine and medical technology.  The papers said that in 10 years time, the medical side of 3d ;printing could be as much as $200 billion.  The breakthrough would be in bio printing, where the technology could be a game changer.

Some common applications in medicine where most of you are involved, are in implants, bandages, and even in customized eyeglass  (not to mention use in fashion)

In my discussion with the CEO of Omnifab, applications of the technology, aside from medical are in aerospace, metallurgy, defense, and rapid prototyping.  I believe that more widespread use of 3d printing will level up our capacity in terms of design, manufacturing and many more

Regenerative Medicine

This is about stem cells and molecular biology.  There is department in a Makati Hospital who employ topnotch scientists in this field.  I do not know much about this.  The only anecdote I heard is about the former Dean of this School and a professor with kidney failure who lived longer and had a better quality of life due to stem cell.

From what I heard, they are planning to bring down its cost from zillions to only hundreds of thousand.  This I heard from the initiative of a scientist entrepreneur to be who is with us this afternoon

Entrepreneurship

In the Creativity and Design training attended by yours truly (sponsored by AGSB) Tina Sellig of Stanford U (the school of Larry Page the chief of Google) at Bangkok Thailand several years back, the 3d printer was mentioned as a modern tool for rapid prototyping.   This is now the buzz word for Lean Start up by Eric Ries. The 3d printer cuts by several processes, and months the time it takes from concept to prototype and perhaps Alpha testing.

Thus, my dream for teaching entrepreneurship would be to have a 3d printer lab in the school, or connect to a lab which has a 3d printer for rapid prototyping (there are such firms now?)

Fortunately for us, I heard that plans are abuzz about a govt agency involved in science and technology who will invest zillions just to make sure that we have the tools and equipmet that will be propel Philippines to the next level of design and manufacturing prowess. I hope this pushes through.

One of the speakers is a graduate of MBAH and of this subject. He has blazed trail for the Philippines in terms of knee joint replacement.  He was recognized by BBC and IdeaSpace for his innovation.  He will inspire and motivate us to pursue innovations in medical science and technology. We are proud of his achievement not only about his research and game changing technology but may be he benefited from his training in MBAH and entrepreneurship.

Lastly I would like to ask as what Pres Duterte asked when he took his oath of office. Why are we here?

We are here for nation building (the AGSB Mantra)  A healthy nation is  a wealthy nation. By learning new technology:  we can

     1.  Use modern and  effective methods and materials to cure
     2. Bringing down costs of advanced medical care and technology
     3.  Lessen suffering and pain

And for most entrep and business students, all we can say is that presidents come and go, but entrepreneurs and businessmen are here to stay.  And many of the strides we have made in economy and business achievements are perhaps due to the many little things we do today, unnoticed by mainstream media and the public.
